WHO WE ARE

In 1937, Herbert Train and his father-in-law, Joseph Swiff, founded Swiff-Train Company. The company focused on salvaging burned cotton bales and collecting used cotton and burlap bagging which was used to wrap the end of the cotton bales. The cotton bales required steel strapping to hold the bales together.

Starting in December 1941, most United States steel was used for the war effort and the company had to find other sources for the steel strapping.  Herbert Train found such source in Mexico. This was a key factor in the growth of his business during the 1940s because Swiff-Train was not only able to use the steel strapping for its own operation but also to sell to many others.

After World War II, newly rebuilt steel mills opened in both Europe and Japan empowering Swiff-Train to become a steel trading company, wherein the company purchased various types of structural steel products, including angles, beams, round deformed reinforcing steel bars and multiple types of wire products.

The company gained a reputation for being an aggressive and innovative steel importer. By 1947, Swiff-Train's success in the steel trade made it advisable to close the bagging and cotton business and concentrate on steel.

During the 1950's, home mortgages started allowing the financing of the interiors of homes. Swiff-Train capitalized on this opportunity by expanding into the wholesale flooring business. They continued to expand this business and by the 1980s, they were manufacturing multiple products in Asia. In 1973, the company switched the steel business to operate under the American Steel name. The steel and floor covering businesses continued to grow. In 2014, Swiff-Train sold the floor-covering distribution business which at the time was doing revenue in excess of $110 million dollars. Within the steel business, American Steel expanded by introducing multiple types of wire products including spring wire for the mattress industry, prestressing single wire for the tank and pipe industry, and 7 wire prestressed black and galvanized strand wires for the construction industry.

When the family sold the flooring division, it retained the rights to conduct the steel business using the Swiff-Train name, so the steel division name changed to Swiff-Train American, Inc.

Today, the Swiff-Train American name is undergoing a rebranding campaign to accommodate exciting new product offerings. With the 5th generation of the family entering the business, the freshly branded Train Industries includes a dedicated team of employees and a strong supplier and customer base. As we celebrate over 87 years since Herbert and Joseph launched our family business, the future of Train Industries is exciting and dynamic.
